Lake Texoma Fishing Report, February 2015

February, used to be a month that I stayed inside, and waited for Spring and warm weather. Not any more. I have fished at least half the time in each of the months since December. I have not had a bad day, other than some times I have been scouting, and then it was worth it, as it is also beautiful in the winter also. I have learned that fish do, as I had suspected, move west, but since I didnt fish during the cold months before, I was not sure, but I know now, fishing is good year round on this lake in the winter. I do not know north towards the highway 70 bridge, so not really sure where to start, therefore do not go that direction other than to look. I do know west, real well. Shore lines, and depth have changed drastically since I was there back in the 90s. Those who cast for stripers, know the spots where fish gather during winter, dead sticking fishermen know the spots, and I am not sure anymore about bait fishing, so wont say anything about it for sure, but I know what I do, Troll, is working with me, and think those that toss alabama rigs, or dead stick, are doing good also. I can tell you Sunday, during high winds, and low temperatures, I pulled two fish, one 19.5 and the other over 14 pounds, and got all my overs, throwing back fish in the range of 12-13 pounds, at ease, quitting around 10, well before the 1 oclock cut off. At that I still ended up second, with the winners of the BLT tournament getting two fish over 35 pounds. I have not changed my techniques from warm water to cold water, I run the same depth most of the time. The hot water times, yes are real deep, or hiding near cover. I have gotten good, (maybe lucky) that I do not lose rigs any more, a big saving from when I first started. I am looking forward to a good year, slowed some on booking trips, as having left knee issues (old football injury) with left knee replacement in November. My age has remained somewhat young for a man of 73, because of my being active, and Gods help in catching fish. I will soon leave this to the youngsters, as I have a lot of things I still want to do, besides guide, want to maybe write a book, but my endeavor is still to help those who need some advice asto catching stripers, and having fun fishing on Lake Texoma.... The fishing and big fish, is the best I have seen in 20 so years, so expect lots of fish caught in/or above the 20-25 pound range. Anyway best of everything to everybody, and hope to see you on the water, catching fish

Fishing Report from TPWD (Nov. 20)

GOOD. Water stained; 69 degrees; 1.69 feet below pool. Striper fishing is great on live bait and lures. Topwaters are landing bites early along sandy points and creeks. Cast swimbaits under the birds working or on structure in 15-20 feet of water. Live bait is producing limits of fish on ledges in 30-40 feet of water. Catfishing is great on cut shad and whole gizzard shad. Look near the rivers and off the river channels on deep flats 30-40 feet of water. Big blues are starting to show up. Crappie fishing is picking up. Use jigs and small shad under dock floats and along the tops of brush piles in 6-12 feet of water. Electronics help locate active fish suspended throughout the brush. Bass fishing will continue to improve as temperatures drop and water levels rise. Look for bass to be more active, chasing baits and making more mistakes. Try Alabama rigs with flukes and hard baits off the banks towards the middle of shallow coves and near docks in 5-12 feet of water. Use electronics to locate brush and structure bait will be holding on with bigger bass roaming the ledges. Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Guaranteed Guide Service. Striped bass are excellent with slabs and swimbaits along the ledges and drop-offs. When there is bird action follow the birds and beneath. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors. Crappie are excellent on brush piles in 8-25 feet of water with the best bite on ⅛ ounce jig, and tipping the jig with minnows. This pattern will be consistent until the water reaches the upper 50s.
