What's up everybody, it's Simon from Lake Hub
0:02
Today, we're talking about the best knife to take with you hunting
0:06
If you've been following along with some of the videos we've made before about pocket knives
0:11
you already know that I'm a big believer that form follows function
0:16
So, when you're hunting, what are you trying to do? If you're going to be successful, you're going to be cleaning an animal
0:24
So you definitely want to prepare for that. If you're going to be out in the field, out of the swamps
0:30
bushwhacking, out at the lake, whatever kind of hunting that you're going to be doing
0:34
you might run into some situations where you just need a handy knife
0:39
You can pack one knife that serves both purposes, or what I like to do is keep my cleaning knife and my handy knife separate
0:48
So I carry two knives no matter what I'm hunting from dove, squirrels, rabbits, turkey, deer, ducks
0:58
whatever it is, I'm taking two different knives and here's what they are. My handy knife is usually
1:06
this one. This is a Kerchaw Storm. It's a model 1475. They don't make it anymore. But I've carried
1:14
this on my hip for so long that it's like an extension of me. It's even missing like some of the
1:18
grip material and stuff. What I like about it, I like that it's full size. Fits my big
1:25
gorilla hands, right? I like that it also happens to have a skinning blade, which is really handy
1:33
I find this style of blade more handy for a beater knife than a drop point I also like that it a liner lock What that means is that I can open and close it with one hand
1:50
That's key. I talk about that in my video about the perfect pocket knife for fishing, how
1:56
critical that is. And when you're out in the field and you're hunting, this can really come in
2:01
handy. Now, what do I use this for? For the most part, I'm just using it for whatever task needs a knife
2:08
I might be opening something. I might be trying to cut some vines out of my way
2:13
you know, something like that. So this knife is not very sharp anymore
2:17
I have to work really hard to keep it sharp. You can see it's been beat up along the edge
2:24
I'm okay with that. Again, this is my on my hip handy knife
2:28
So what do I use to clean animals with? You always want to be prepared for that success, right
2:34
You want to hope for the best here and you want to be prepared. So what I use is a buck 110
2:40
I use this because it's classic. I use it because I love it. Is it a pocket knife
2:45
Well, it can fit in your pocket. You know, it's not made to
2:52
It doesn't have pocket clip. But I kind of give Buck a free pass on the term pocket knife because they're one of the originals
3:00
I mean, they're like the pioneer of, you know, this kind of slip joint, you know, folding knife
3:05
and so I call it a pocket knife even though it comes with the sheath
3:10
it's made to ride on your hips the only problem I've had is that the loops
3:14
really didn't last very long but I used the knife to cut a couple slits and this has lasted
3:20
to me for 10 years without any sign of giving up right here
3:25
so I think this is going to last really a long time just the stitching that held the loops in right here and here It just came loose It kind of shoddy stitching Bucks not quite what they
3:36
used to be, but they're still really, really quality knives. If you get the ones that are made in America
3:43
there are buck knives made in China these days. So keep an eye out for that. It'll say
3:49
made America on the packaging, it'll have an American flag. This one has a state of Idaho stamped on here
3:55
which is where their headquarters are. So again, this is a buck 110
4:00
This is a classic. This is a Boy Scout knife. This is a classic hunting knife
4:06
You could see, I even had some battery acid that dropped, you know, back when I, I used to use this a little bit more
4:12
But now I've just decided, you know what? I'm going to use my feeder for chores
4:17
And this is for cleaning, period. So I keep it very sharp
4:21
I keep it very clean. and I only use it to clean animals
4:26
Now, this is not a one-hand open-close because this is a lockback, right
4:32
It's a lockback knife. You need two hands. I mean, maybe you can open it with one hand
4:37
Maybe you can open or close it with one hand if you like push this and lean it against your body
4:41
or do something not very safe. But it's really made to be open and closed with two hands
4:48
If I was going to buy a cleaning knife, today it'd be different the folding knife is nice it's handy I do I just love the
5:01
aesthetic of a of a buck folding knife but it's not as convenient for cleaning
5:09
and washing as a fixed blade knife so if I was gonna buy a hunting knife today it be a fixed blade synthetic handled instead of a wood handle because this gets slippery when it gets bloody And
5:24
with a gut hook, Buck makes a really good fixed blade, you know, deer hunting knife. And since
5:33
this rides on my hip anyway, it's not really that much different. It would be taller. Obviously
5:39
it would stick out like this and so it'd be taller when I'm sitting down and all that kind of stuff but
5:45
where it rides kind of on my on my three quarters right here um there wouldn't be that big of a deal
5:52
if you wanted to throw a third blade in there if you if you are a back country hunter if you find yourself
6:02
bushwhacking trailblazing making your own way if you are backcountry hunter if you are backcountry
6:09
backpack hunting, if you're, you know, on a mule in the Rockies, then take with you a survival knife
6:17
Now this is my favorite knife for camping. You'll see that in a camping video and I get into more of why that is in that video
6:25
This is an Ontario knife company, but it's basically, it's like a K bar style. So it's like a military issue. It's an air force issue
6:32
knife and big sheath, big leather sheath hangs off your belt. It's heavy. It's heavy duty
6:40
Look how thick that is. And this is an all-purpose survival knife. So if you want to up your game
6:47
I would carry all three of those. That's what I would do. But what you'll find me doing is carrying
6:54
two, one for cleaning and one for handiwork. I'm Simon from Lake Hub. Get out there and bag something, y'all
