Surviving Floods on Lake Texoma

Cedar Mills Marina is just one of the many marinas on Lake Texoma dealing with another round of flooding, followed by decisions, demolition and rebuilding of marina buildings.

I’m posting about Cedar Mills because it’s the closest marina to where I live on the lake. My heart goes out to all the people who have been battling the high flood waters as owners and employees, and of course the owners of boats and cabins who are dealing with great loss as well.

The photos below will paint the whole picture for everyone who has been coming to Lake Texoma for years, and also for new fans and followers of the Big Lake between Texas and Oklahoma.

You’ll see the original Pelican’s Landing Restaurant at Cedar Mills Marina that was a very popular attraction on the West End of Lake Texoma until it was damaged beyond reasonable repair in the flood of 2007.

Then you’ll see a photo of it in flood water up to its roof, with sailboats in the background, and the huge, walk-in restaurant cooler floating alongside it in the deep water, at roof level.

Mostly you won’t need these words, but I just want to make sure you follow the history of my photos.

Then you’ll see a photo of the original Pelican’s Landing Restaurant after it was demolished, prior to construction of the new Pelican’s Landing Restaurant in 2008, after the 2007 flood.

Then you’ll see a photo of the existing new Pelican’s Landing Restaurant BEFORE the 2015 flood. In a previous post you'll see a photo of flood waters up to the roof of this new restaurant, too.

Then you’ll see two photos of the new Pelican’s Landing Restaurant now, July 2015 as flood waters recede.

Owners Kris and Molly Worstell and all their Cedar Mills Marina employees and contractors have been wading through the flood waters for months, finally having their Ships Store building back in business now. Now they’ll be turning their attention to their docks, their Service Shop and Pelican’s Landing Restaurant.

Thanks for supporting their recovery efforts over the coming year, keeping in mind that there are other marina owners in similar circumstances all around the lake.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Dec. 31)

GOOD. Water stained; 53 degrees; 0.97 feet above pool. Striper fishing is excellent, with milder temperatures lingering and fish continuing to take live bait exceptionally well. They’re being found on deep flats and ledges in 35-60 feet of water. Soft plastics are also working and will become even more effective as the temperatures drop. Keep an eye out for gulls on the main lake and pelicans in the coves to locate active fish. Fish are very healthy and full of shad heading into the colder months. Catfishing has slowed as fish move toward the rivers with the inflow of water. Drift flats in 25-45 feet of water using gizzard shad or cut rough fish. Smaller blues are still schooled along the bluffs in 30-50 feet of water. Use your electronics to locate active crappie on brush and structure near coves and points in 18-25 feet of water. Hair jigs and small shad will produce great results. For bass fishing, look for fish moving off points to secondary ledges and humps. Use plastics and slow-moving baits off the banks in 8-15 feet of water. On sunny days, target rocky coves, as bass will pull up to feed in the warmer shallows. Report by Jacob Orr, Lake Guaranteed Guide Service. Striped bass are good with Alabama rigs or swimbaits in 10-15 feet of water, and deadsticking in deeper water. Birds are working most days. Report by John Blasingame, Adventure Texoma Outdoors.
